How to calculate plot area from survey measurements

From boundary dimensions to a reliable area figure — here is how plot area is worked out and checked.

Calculating a plot’s area sounds simple for a rectangle but gets tricky for irregular parcels. Knowing the basics helps you sanity-check a surveyor’s figure.

Regular plots

For a rectangular plot, area is length × breadth. Confirm the dimensions match the sketch and the record before trusting the result.

Irregular plots

Irregular shapes are split into triangles/trapezoids and summed, which is why a licensed surveyor’s measured sketch is the reliable source for anything non-rectangular.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my calculated area differ from the RTC?

Ground shape, unit conversion or record errors can cause differences. A survey reconciles them; large gaps deserve investigation.
